Myth 1: ‘It gives you an instant energy hit’
This is probably the most common misunderstanding, and it comes from conflating urolithin A with stimulants. Caffeine and similar compounds act within minutes because they block adenosine receptors. Urolithin A works nothing like that. Its proposed mechanism is mitophagy — the housekeeping process by which cells identify worn-out mitochondria and recycle them so healthier ones can take their place. That is a slow, structural process, not a jolt.

Liu, D'Amico and colleagues (2022, JAMA Network Open) studied older adults for roughly four months and tracked muscle endurance, measured as the number of contractions before fatigue. These are multi-week readouts. So if you take urolithin A expecting a same-day lift, you are measuring the wrong thing on the wrong timescale. It is better understood as something that supports the machinery of cellular energy production over time than as a pick-me-up. Myth 2: ‘Eating pomegranate and walnuts gives you enough’
Ellagitannin-rich foods are the raw material for urolithin A, so it seems logical that eating more of them would do the job. The catch is conversion. Your body does not absorb urolithin A directly from food; gut bacteria have to transform the ellagic acid released from those ellagitannins into urolithin A, and not everyone's microbiome does this well. Even among good converters, the amounts generated from a normal serving fall far below what clinical trials used. Myth 4: ‘It turns back the clock’
This is the myth that most needs careful language. Urolithin A does not undo aging, and no honest reading of the literature claims it does. Ryu and colleagues (2016, Nature Medicine) demonstrated that urolithin A induced mitophagy, extended lifespan in the roundworm C. elegans, and improved muscle function in rodents.
